We are a woman headed fledgling institution and our journey has just begun; as a non-profit, gender research organization, Beyond Boundaries came into being in December, 2007. Based in Chennai, India, we are gender equity collective with a focus on research, capacity building, policy analysis and initiatives. Our vision is pan-Indian and we desire to stretch across our national boundaries, in order to share and learn from other cultures and nations.

Our organization uses a gender perspective in all its research activities. The social context determines our identities as men and women within a society; the roles of men and women are socially ascribed. As a research organization, Beyond Boundaries is involved in generating and disseminating knowledge that will underline that gender boundaries are breachable. Beyond Boundaries engages in dialogue on how we can bring about institutional transformations that will make it possible to bring in fluidities in the gender boundaries.

Undoubtedly the first step is towards empowering women; but equally important on our agenda is to sensitize men to be equal partners in the process of gender equity. We believe that the social structures and institutions within which we live have to change to pave the way for women, men and transgendered persons to realize their potentials to the fullest…

We dream of being able to go beyond our socially prescribed boundaries of the self. The motif of a flying bird stretching beyond the boundaries captures our vision; when women and men and those not falling in both these categories of gender, move beyond the socially constructed boundaries around them, they realize the joy of existence and together work for a world which values gender peace and gender justice…
